The Urban Homesteading Project was founded in 2007 by Francisca Caporali, Laura Chipley and Pilar Ortiz.
Francisca Caporali is a Brazillian artist based in Brooklyn. She has a degree in Communications, a M.A. from MECAD-ESDI in Barcelona and is a current student at Hunter College's Integrated Media Arts MFA program. She has received the 2007/8 AAUW International Fellowship and a 2008 LMCC Swing Space Residency. Francisca has worked extensively in documentary, new media and video art. Her videos have been shown in over 50 different festivals and exhibitions and she has received several awards with "The Same Old Choice" and "The Quiet and Subtle Cyclone." Laura Chipley is a multimedia artist who lives in Brooklyn, NY. Her projects aim to scratch away at the surface of the ordinary and investigate the fantastical, spiritual and subversive qualities of everyday objects and human interactions. Laura has a B.A. in Film from Bard College and is an MFA candidate in Hunter College's Integrated Media Arts program. She has worked extensively in independent media and arts education and is currently a visiting professor in the American Studies Department at SUNY Old Westbury Collage. Laura's videos have been screened in several festivals including the CUNY/SVA Symposium on Propaganda and the New York/Avingnon Film Festival and her installations have been exhibited at galleries such as Phillips de Pury and Dabora Gallery. laurachipley.com
Pilar Ortiz is a Chilean architect and media artist who studies the ongoing transformations of cities and cultural expression in public space. She's currently pursuing an MFA in Integrated Media Arts at Hunter College. Her video projects have addressed issues such as temporary cities and public space as a terrain for cultural expression and social interaction. Her work has been exhibited at the IV Latin-American Architecture Biennale (Lima), Beyond Media (Florence), Made in Video (Cppenhagen), Chilechannel at Centro Cultural Matucana 100 (Santiago), Seleccion Natural and Spam City at the Museum of Contemporary Art (Santiago), and LHExhibition at Skuc (Ljubljana). She has been awarded FONDART and The Worldstudio Scholarship.
